I've only tried this on Collector's Edition 1.5. The process may be different on other versions.
The end game final screen indicates that you can continue to explore the world with your Player Character (PC). By the time you see that screen, it is too late to save (maybe the game already saved your PC somewhere?). Be sure to save your game just before freeing you-know-who from the crystal cage, because that triggers the final script that finishes the game.
Be sure your advanced character is in your most recently saved single player game. If necessary, load your game then save it and quit.
From the main menu, select MULTIPLAYER.
Select LAN. This is a Local Area Network mode for multiplayer gaming. You do not need any other players.
Select HOST GAME.
Select LOAD CHARACTER.
On the character screen, select LAST SINGLEPLAYER SAVED PC.
Select PLAY THIS CHARACTER. You are taken back to the HOST screen.
Select START.
You'll start a new game with the advanced character. Press ESC and SAVE the game.
Quit the current game. You are taken back to the MAIN MENU.
Select SINGLE PLAYER.
Load the game that you just saved. Enjoy.
You can use a similar process to import your PC into other savegames by loading the savegame on the HOST screen, then using LOAD CHARACTER to import another PC into the selected savegame. However, you may lose some special items or other progress. The storyline progress is not part of your character, but rather a part of the savegame. That's why you lose most of your special stuff when you import a PC into a new game; there's no progress stored in a new game.
If you want to level-up, then find a BIG fight with huge experience points (be sure you set your options to HARD monsters -- that gives extra points) and save your game. Then fight the monsters and level-up and save in a different save slot. Use the character import process to put your advanced character into the earlier savegame and do the fight again. Save and repeat until you get up to the level you want. Each iteration becomes easier, because you are leveling up each time.
You can use a variation of the above process to recover an advanced multiplayer PC. When a host saves the game, a copy of your PC is saved in the host's savegame and on your computer. You can use the LOAD CHARACTER button and select LAST MULTIPLAYER SAVED PC to get that character imported into your LAN game. Then start the game, save it, quit, reload in singleplayer mode. Any stuff that you gave away in the multiplayer game will be lost, so be careful when using this process to recover a multiplayer PC for singleplayer gaming.
Sometimes, you may get stuck somewhere, like inside the Skuldoon Arena and cannot get out. You can use this process to import your character into another (earlier) savegame that you (hopefully) saved before the problem area. Always use multiple saves at regular intervals and before entering dungeons, so you can start over in case of a glitch.
