Have U just patched 1.64? Since the black edition is 1.60 U need:
1.61 & 1.62 & 1.64

Any errors during installation and/or patching? Have U tryed to reinstall the game and does it work without patching as 1.60 version?

And the game just wont start? No errormessages, no nothing? Weired.
Maybe its caused by Ur CPU if its a dualcore AMD? If so read this post from Varus (http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/showpost.php?p=188396&postcount=4)
There might be various reasons why U cant install a disk.
Do U have a NVidea firewall? Are U able to copy the disk to HDD?
Check these 3 threads taken from the technical support of the PK forum.

i have the same problem with sp demo 3. wich is a bad sign. i noticed my nvidea fire wall asked me if i wanted to allow the game to work wich i did maybe that has something to do with this as it did the same for the real game. any other ideas or am i stuck??

Ur welcome, im pretty sure we find the reason for Ur problem. Thanks for the kind words.
Usualy the gamershell files seem to be ok. Do U use winzip?
I would recommend to try the SP2 Demo because that is using the same advanced grafic that is used for the black edition too. So if that demo wont work there must be something wrong with Ur PC or drivers/settings.
SP1 Demo (http://www.gamershell.com/download_5125.shtml)
SP2 Demo (http://www.gamershell.com/download_5522.shtml)
MP Demo (http://www.gamershell.com/download_6460.shtml)

I am about to reveal to you the big secret of this game!...Its gay. Joking:)
Seriously heres the deal.
It doesnt matter what amount of cpu or high tech fancy stuff you hav, it all has to do with the game and INTEL.
I read on a site i found on google that there are two main intel processors that most computers have in them, but they wont run painkiller whether you treat it kind or shoot it and throw it out of a plane in frustration.
The problem you ask? Well, the intel processors support the Lighting and Shading part, the only problem is that its run by SOFTWARE. When you run Painkiller it tries to start HAREWARE DirectX 9 renderer, as that is what it has been programmed to operate on.
The solution? either contact intel and/or Dreamcatcher or buy a new intel chipset.
