I bought Painkiller Gold Edition off of Steam a few days ago, started playing today and just half an hour ago completed the First Chapter on Daydream difficulty.
I went to the next Chapter and discovered that the first level of Chapter 2 can't be played on this difficulty (a bit annoying since I'll have to play the first chapter through on a different difficulty to experience this level, but anyway...) so I go on to Level 2, the Opera House and click the jewel to play the level, the loading bar gets about halfway and then a Runtime Error comes up concerning:

...Steamapps/common/painkiller gold edition/bin/painkiller.exe

I click about a bit and pres Esc and another window comes up saying:

The instruction at "0x2112de1a" referenced "0c0fee5cc8". The memory could not be "read".

I really don't know what this is all about and have already had a couple of minor problems with the game that were sorted out by restarting my PC, is this the same sort of thing or is it more serious?

I hope to get some helpful response.

For your first question we've an easy answer (from the FAQ...
you'll find them under the sticky thread Painkiller Resources
http://dreamcatcherinteractive.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23460 )

Missing Levels
A few people have asked why that there are "hidden" levels within Chapter 2 and Chapter 4. Chapter 2 Level 1, The Prison, is only available on Nightmare and Trauma levels and Chapter 4 Level 4, The Forest, is only available on the Trauma difficulty.
and from there also this:
*NOTE* Chapter 5 is NOT playable on the Trauma difficulty. Also, an alternate and ‘secret’ ending is accessed after clearing the Trauma difficulty.

PK isn't for many things not a normal game. There're more inovative gameplay involved as normal FPS like Quake, Half-life, Counterstrike, RTCW and so on. That's the reason because you've found this forum - Welcome here - 3 years after coming out of the game!

But for your real problem it's much more difficult to find the reason for.
Could you tell us something about your specs?
For now:
- it could be caused by a bad installing - (misreading of CD data)
- bad RAM sector or poor virtual RAM
- is it a repeatable failure? (starting PK - starting that level...and again that failure?)
- Have you tried to reload your last save from the Level before, and after ending the level, THEN directly to carry on with this next C2L2?

Well I don't really know much technical stuff but I managed to sort it out by deleting the game content from Steam and then re-installing it, the Operahouse seems to be working fine now but thanks for your help and in answering my question about Chapter 2 Level 1.
