Just would like to know how big the usual unit cap is in the single player campaign and, most importantly, skirmish.
I found in the single player demo the second mission where in you have to defend pillars, the relatviely low unit cap is a serious hindrance. (especially when you need to defend your base as well.)
I want to field armies of about 40-50 ships, not a single small batallion of 6-10.
I hope at least skirmish mode lets you choose the unit cap like they did in homeworld 2 (low, med, high)

Well, in that case, this might not be the game for you then. Thus far in the single player missions it hasn't really gone over a resource cap of 25. I would imagine the max resource cap would be about 50. Considering each small ship takes about 2 resource, you would probably get 20 ships at best, but they would be kind of useless as you would be fielding a ton of small fliers with no larger vessels.
The game really isn't about fielding massive armadas. It's more about having a reasonably sized fleet, and using it well. It would be very hard to micromanage the genes on 50+ ships.
In regards to protecting your base. It depends on what you're doing. Generally I give my base some defenses, and then take off for the nearest base with my fleet. Usually there aren't enough enemies attacking my base to overwhelm the base defenses itself. As a general rule I send in two fighters to capture the enemy base while the rest of them keep any defending forces busy. Rarely do I have any issues keeping my base secure in this situation.
Hell for micromanagment we MUST have pause button, and we don't have it, as far as I know

do not buy this game. Whatever you do, until they provide pause and save game functions, dont waste your money.
