My old gforce TI4200 died so I moved to a 6800 without any other modification (hardware or software) and now I am unable to play
this is what I get at the begining and when loading a game

Either your new video card is foo-barred or you have a driver problem. What I recommend doing first is as follows (I'm assuming you're running under Windows XP):
Download Driver Cleaner Pro (http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745) and install it.
Download the 93.71 driver (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html) (this is for XP) to your hard disk.
Uninstall the old graphic card driver through "Change or Remove Programs".
Reboot your computer into "Safe Mode" (Press F8 before Windows loads).
Run Driver Cleaner Pro and select "NVIDIA" from the drop-down list.
Press "Start" (or was it "Clean"?).
When it finishes, reboot normally.
Cancel out of any Hardware Wizard dialogs.
Run the nVidia installation program for the 93.71 driver you downloaded.
Follow the prompts.
Hopefully, it was just some remnants of the old driver causing the problem and doing the steps above solves it. If it doesn't, try the video card in another machine and see if you get similar problems - that'll prove if the video card is at fault or not.

Some basic questions:
- wich edition is Ur game (3CD Basic, DVD Gold Edition (or stream),DVD Black Edition, or the sh1ttyest of them all the Special Edition)?
- have U patched the game (1.61 + 1.62 + 1.64)?
- have U tryed to reinstall the game?
- any errors during installation?

That isn't a useful reference...
Do you've reinstalled the game after changing the GPU?
Keep in mind that there're many gamers around here with the same card without your problem!
Don't think that always the newest driver, especially nVidia's, are the best choice for your GPU.
Following Blaise's advices are the best way because
"it was just some remnants of the old driver causing the problem ", especially because of your "GPU-generation-jump-update".
