How to disarm Traps?

I cannot seem to disarm any traps. My character is a thief and I have lockpicks. Any pointers on the best way to do this?

You play a 'match' game to disarm traps and pick locks. While the timer runs across the pieces, you click on the one to match at the appropriate time. Lockpicks and thief skills help slow down the progress, nothing more.
