I too had some serious problems getting this game to work. I tried updating my display drivers and using the posted user_config files. Nothing worked. I was able to get into the mulit-player side but when I tried to launch a campagin, I would get an error on the desktop and the game would lock-up. I then I went to DirectX 9.0.
Now IronStorm works great (a crash here or there, but nothing major). Once you get this to work, this game is awesome. The graphics are awesome and the game play is great.

Athlon XP 1700+
Windows 2000 Professional
500 MB RAM
ATI All-In-Wonder Raedon 7500
ASUS MotherBoard
It's too bad so many people are having problems with this game b/c it really is one of the best games I ever played. It really is.
