Default Locking Up

I did a search and read the Tech FAQ, but failed to find a topic that matched my problem.

I bought this game back in 2005, but this problem caused me to shelf it. After the 1.4 release, I decided to dust it off and try it again, but the problem still exists...

After I create a character and enter the world, the game locks up to the point where I have to do a hard boot. I can't even get back to the desktop. I have tried installing it several times, with and without being patched. Still locking up. SO here's my specs:

Pentium 4 HP 3.2GHz, 1G ram, Nvidia 6800 GT

I dont even mess with the video settings, because it locks up before I have a chance. I can run most games at near max settings (including Oblivion), and I know it's not a heat issue. I have the latest Nvidia drivers too. Any ideas?

Have you ever defragged the hard drive? Your setup seems quite sufficient. Have you played any other recent high tech games with no problems? With that 6800, you need at the very least a 350 watt power supply. To be absolutely sure, I have 450 watt ps with my 6800 gs 256mb, and I'm using the latest nvidia drivers 84.21.

Actually, I just defragged the hard drive last week. 200G seagate. I have a 450W power supply. No other lockups, in fact, this is the most stable platform I've ever owned. I've noticed quite a few people complaining about Oblivion crashing and I have yet to crash it once. It's only Dungeon Lords that seems to be causing me trouble. I even closed down every non-essential process and it still locks up. Very frustrating.

Go to the site for your mother board and get the latest drivers for Winxp... should solve your problem.

I have no real problems, but I was thinking to get a new video card for the future (whatever the biggest and best Nvidia is - I now have an ATI). I am wondering if I can just swap my video card and power supply (I have a 250 watt - will change to 450) with no problems. Will that much bigger power supply fry my motherboard or something? I don't know anything about hardware.

The wattage just means it will carry hardware that requires more power. I don't know what ATI you have. I just purchased an fx6800 gs 256mb agp from TigerDirect for $179. I have a 450 watt power supply which runs my system nicely, but I would just as soon have more at around 550 for my ATX board. Power supplies now are fairly cheap and you might as well get a high rated one as security for future hardware requirements.

Thanks. I have a RADEON 9700 Pro WITH 128 mb.
DL runs fine but Oblivion runs slow at times and occasionally crashes.

Your specs are fine and I think you have all the drivers so isolateing the problem may be a bit tricky.
You may want to veiw your event veiwer to see what caused it.
In most cases Ive seen the data refers to the video drivers.
Off hand you can try this.
In display settings under advanced then troubleshoot turn off write combing.
Hope that helps.

I'll try that out. I hope it works because I am out of options and I'd like to play the game. I did delete and reinstall the latest driver for my card, and for a second it seemed like it was going to work. Then it locked up again. Well, I'm off to try out your suggestion...
