Except for a very rare few chest, every chest in the game is locked, even the ones underwater, which is annoying because you have to almost drown to open some, and I don't think liquid air potions work, least they never seem to work for me. Anyways, I digree..again.
Point is, while so many chest are universally trapped, there aren't that many doors that are locked, and i've never found a chest that was. Doesn't mean there isn't one somewhere. The last lock I remember picking was in Fathien's place. I haven't encountered a lock since, and I've not need to raise my lock picking past four as a fighter/mage..what a wonderful combo Wonder why this is? Maybe when I redo the game as a mage/thief, I'll probably get some guild quest that involve picking locks or something, but other then that I can't imagine at this point in the game..now doing the shadow ruins, after that just the black swamp to go..needing a lock pick skill..at least not after fathien, but probably not at all really. |

You don't need pick locks skill at all. There are only 2 locked doors that can be picked in the whole game and you can find keys to them (one you mentioned and one in fargrove sewer. And it doesn't seem to increase the effectivness of lock picks as it suppost to. There are a few chest that you don't have to pick but some kind of creature jumps out of every one of them

Yes oh yes you do need lock picks and lock picking skill if you wish to open some of the more complex treasure chests without having to save and try it over and over, Lock picks raise your percentage chance of picking locks/chests which slows down the rate at which the red bar goes across the lock giving u the chance to push the buttons at the right time to unlock the chest. At least if you wish to do things the easy way.

I think you might have that confused with the disarm trap skill

I've been looking in to this on my second go around. The pick locks skill does increase the effectiveness of lock picks. Lock pick skill at level 0, master lock picks increase your chance to open a chest 15%. At level 5 master lock picks increase your chance by 40%. So you can get through the game with out pick locks skill but investing some points in it will help. Sorry for the bad info in my earlier post. D
